How can I hide my personal info when I buy a domain?

I purchased a domain through yahoo a couple of months ago and I paid the extra 99 cents to keep my billing address, name, etc private from the public but someone still managed to find out and they posted it on the internet for everyone to see. How did they manage to find this info out if I paid extra to keep it private and how can I prevent it from happening again if I do decide to buy another domain?
