How to buy a domain name and own it ....?

I would like to buy a domain name and own the rights . How does it work ? Any suggestion or links to reputable pages? Thanks

2. well If you register it with like www.godaddy.com you own the domain no one can take it from you. ahhg u beat me by 20 seconds =X
3. i like to use www.dreamhost.com usually domain hosts like dreamhost help buy the domain registration for you. registering and buying a domain name and hosting it are two separate issues. you can buy a domain name but it's not use unless you get someone to host it for you (i.e. keep the files that you upload etc) unless you know how to host it yourself registration of domain is usually on an annual fee basis, they are usually $10 for .com domains and maybe more for others such as .org or .au

5. If you do not have hosting you could look for a site offering a free domain if you buy a subscription. I use Yahoo Buiness. $12\mo and almost no restrictions. If you want it for basic static web pages and the email addresses try Microsoft. You are fairly limited with their free hosting thought.
