domain,website question?

my wife and i are trying to decide on getting a domain or website name. we are lost with all the different sites, what they offer, etc. how do we get started, wheres the best to go, have seen offers for free ones, but afraid we would only get hooked in then there will be hidden charges for extra things we may need. we want a site that offers everything we will need up front. if we have to pay, how much does a good website cost per month. i have webspawner, but not many hits because its low key. we want ppl to be able to type in ---.com and get to our site pretty quick. we also are not that knowledgeable about web design, and all that high tech stuff. we may want to sell items and will need something like pay pal. thanks
