How did the first domain names get purchased? I'm interested in looking at how the first domain names got purchased. In the beginning, did websites like www.cars.com get purchased for $8? Was every name available from the beginning, or only a few? If someone could show me a website with this content, that would be great too! Thanks!

After canceling a domain name, how long would it take to be available again? My sister bought a domain name but then she canceled it because web hosting was not included... Anyway, she really wants that domain name and we're wondering how long it would take for that domain to be available again so she can purchase it again under a different plan from a different provider. Does anyone know about this? Thanks for your help!
What is the process of acquiring expired domain names? When a domain expires, what happens next? Does it go into a pending deletion phase, and then is up for grabs? I want a domain that expired June 16th of this year. Before contacting the former owner (who could capitalize on the fact that someone wants something he controls) I want to know how long until I could just register the domain directly. Also, are there ways of getting on a waiting list, for when a domain becomes available? Thanks in advance
What is the cheapest domain registration available? Hi, want to register a domain name or a few. Want no strings attached domain name registration. Please bear in mind that cheap is below $5 per year., more on the $3 side. I have registered domains for that money before but these deals come and go. Thanks! www.dot.tk is a crap thing it is a /tk domain there are lot of strings attached and you do not even own the domain. So, bad answer. I need a .com site I own.
Domain names based on number of characters? Does anyone know of a website where it's possible to check for available domains, based on numbers of characters, so for example I could do a search for all remaining domains available with 4 characters? Useless to one person - Invaluable to another I guess. I want to set up a website, I want a short domain, 5 or 6 characters, doesn't have to be a real word, as long as it can be spoken. This facility, if it exists, seemed the best way to find such a thing.
available domain checker? please tell me is there any software which checks the availability of domain names in alphabet order like aa, ab, ... to aaaaaaa, aaaaaab, ..... i mean a software to find the existing 3,4,5 letter domains
APlus.net. Scam or Professional. Are domain names being stolen from customers? Our business partner has gone to APlus.net to register domain names. The site informs him that the names are available, he pays, prints his receipt. Then, sometimes days later, he gets a strange email that the Domain names are not available. We have investigated this and found that some of the domain names, that were available, were supposedly registered in 1998, etc. a) Is anyone else having trouble like this with APLus.net Their own rep said that it is virtually impossible for names to come up as AVAILABLE when they are not. Thus, for my business partner to have this happen numerous times, something seems fishy, based on our experiences and proof. The web must have integrity and this can only be done by forcing more honesty onto firms who put money before honesty. It is possible that there are people on the INSIDE who work together, and that the owners of APlus.net do not know about this, but APlus.net is caught in another lie also. Google it...
Good domain name for education blog? I am looking for a good .com or .net domain name for an education website. The website will provide commentary on educational trends, focusing on educational technology but also other topics. Any ideas for catchy and available domain names?

Can you add double names in a domain name?? Lets say I want google.com but it is not available (I dont want this domain name just an example) could I get googlegoogle.com? and would it virtualy be the same as getting google.com? would the search engines see it virtualy the same as google.com? As I said earlier "(I dont want this domain name just an example)" Thank you howard o, that is realy what I wanted to do was use keywords not actual existing doamins like google, the domain names I had in mind are keywords phrases. Also thank you for pointing out that google was an example, everyone is so fast to flame on this now days without even reading. Once I figure out how to accept your answer as number 1 I will. :)
Domain Name with Yahoo? I owned few domain names and bought it through Yahoo. They all expired few months ago, i did not renew them. Today, just for the heck of it, i checked to see if i can buy back the domain names again but it said its already sold. So i went to WHOIS to check out who owns it, it still shows me as the owner/administrator. How can this be? i didn't make a payment? Does Yahoo hold the domain name or something? how can i get rid of it so it doesn't show me as the owner and make the domain name available again to others?
company names vs domain names? i am keen to open a domain with my past and current work, as a freelance graphic designer, yet with the scope to develop the domain into a collab website or design agency, should the opportunity arise. i chose a domain name which would suit that, but when researching into the name, i found that there is (or was) a design company who already owns that name. the domain has expired (it isnt available to register, its now owned by people who register domains when they expire and sell them for $$$.$$), but on researching more, found that the company still remains (i double checked that they hadnt gone bankrupt or moved on, by phoning their number - it rang and their voicemail confirmed they are still in business). apologies for the full explanation! now you know my predicament (im really keen on this particular domain name). i thought that i could register the same domain name but in a .net extension, which i have discovered is unregistered and available. the only thing holding me back from that is that i could be in trouble for doing so. one other thing i should add, is that i searched the (UK) company database (they are based in the UK) to check the company name, and it has returned as unregistered (as a limited company. in my experience [my partner has his own business so i am well taught] a company are only entitled to their chosen business name if they are registered as one.. perhaps im wrong, if i am i would love to be corrected and told otherwise!). any advice given would be great. i would love to register the domain with no fears of being told to close my website down!
Where do I go to register a cheap domain name without hosting? I want to secure the name while its available? When I do a search, ultimately I end up with a hosting company. I haven't decided on a host yet but I want to secure the domain name while I can. Its my understanding that if you get a free domain with a host. That it basicaly belongs to the host. If you decide you want to go somewhere esle you can't take the name with you. I am also looking into having a ecommerce site designed. Thought I would try a freelance designer thinking I could keep the price reasonable. Any tips?
Opinions on domain names please...? The .com domain I want is currently taken. I found that it doesn't expire for another year... I need a website in the meantime. The domain is available with a .net extension... So my question is, in your opinion, would it be more effective to get a.net domain or a similar .com with an added word? Example: www.johnsmith.net OR www.justjohnsmith.com Thanks in advance for expert opinions!!
